Sadly, the CUnit tests don't test that much of xmlroff -- building the
right FO and area trees to test every individual function (even
excluding the auto-generated code) would be such a lot of work that I've
always baulked at doing it, so the CUnit tests are only growing
piecemeal.

The best way to test xmlroff is to run the testsuite, but getting that
set up and working and eyeballing the results is also a lot of work, and
the results are generally not shareable between backends, let alone
between different systems.
